We Lack Intelligent Failure (Tugend)

“One thing I’ve learned is that kids are exquisitely attuned to the real message, and the real message is, ‘Be smart,’” Professor Dweck said. “It’s not, ‘We love it when you struggle, or when you learn and make mistakes.’”
The Many Errors in Thinking About Mistakes (New York Times, November 24, 2007)

Alina Tugend writes an extremely intriguing article for the New York Times dealing with how we send mixed messages about failure to our children and how that in the end doesn't help people train one's self to "intelligently fail," actually learning from their mistakes. Overall it's a great article that everyone should read.
