Catching A Predator?
Has another else watched *NBC Dateline's* show _To Catch A Predator_? For those who are unaware of this "investigative" news report, you can read a "full description of the show over at Wikipedia":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Catch_a_Predator. I'm not here to talk about the show's apparent "benefits" to society, because while seem think the show accomplishes plenty of good ridding neighborhoods of potential "predators", there are others, as well, "who disagree -- and with good reason":http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2006/02/07/publiceye/entry1290135.shtml. I do not, in any fashion, condone the actions of these men that are targeted through the show. If anything it should show us that child molestors are ordinary people like you and I, which also leads me to question that if so many "normal" people engage in such perverted acts -- how many more are committing regularly accepted acts of crime? Either way, again -- that is not my point. My question rests more where the previous article left off in questioning the show's journalistic integrity. Like drug deals, prostitution, and other crimes of the sort; it is rather hard to catch these crimes in action. And it would seem the only way in which to catch these criminals in action is to set-up a trap for them to walk into. Fair enough. Though with the advancement of criminal rights in the 1960's and on, the fine line of entrapment begins to come into play. Does *Dateline* entrap these men in their effort to manufacture news entertainment? And does *Dateline*, which is _not_ a law enforcement agency, preclude these men from a fair and balanced trial of their peers by humilitating them on national television within an sixty-minute, edited, and narrated entertainment piece which has truly one trustic aim -- ratings? Again, I am not endorsing for one bit these men's actions. It saddens me to see such perversion among people, yet it leaves me wondering if the ends in which *Dateline* engages truly justifies the means. This entry was posted on Friday, September 22, 2006 at 9:13pm.
