Belle and Sebastian “The Life Pursuit”
If I could add a sub-title to this album it would be "further challenging whatever the hell you think is the Belle and Sebastian sound" - and it would be entirely appropriate. Since discovering their inspiring album "The Boy with the Arab Strap" in college, I have associated B&S with a more relaxed, moody style of music (or, take a listen to this before you take a jump off that bridge). But now "The Life Pursuit" changes everything. Less apparent now is the enveloping sense of depression which has been replaced by quirky, dance-able music with a strong dose of strong lyrical compositions. "The Blues are Still Blue" is an amazing clone of anything by Pavement, the up-beat number "Sukie in the Graveyard" has some stellar vocal work accompanied by a layer of good ol' church organ music, and then there's "Song For Sunshine" which feels like we've stepped back into time about 30 years. If I was reviewing this album track by track, I'd have to give a disclaimer that the album is all over the map, but as a complete album it couldn't be any sweeter. *WWW:* http://www.belleandsebastian.com/ *Wikipedia:* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belle_&_Sebastian *Review:* PitchforkThis entry was posted on Thursday, June 8, 2006 at 6:29am.
