Will Leitch over at the New York Times finally understands the fact that most Red Sox fans, the ones who watch during the dog-days of summer — through every pitch, hit, loss, and win, all they’ve ever wanted was to just be a winning team. If winning a possible second *World Series* in four years erases our “underdog” status around the league, that’s fine with me. If it means we’re just the Yankees, Jr., again — that’s fine with me. While the country may enjoy the lovable losers Chicago Cubs, I would much rather enjoy the 26 World Series titles that the Yankees have on their shelves. There was a time when the Red Sox were the Yankees, after winning five of the first 15 World Series. Then they traded away Babe Ruth and well, there was a slight pause for 86 years before they grabbed their next one. If the team is finally becoming what they once were all those years ago — again: I’m fine with that.
I think I’m finally understanding what it’s like to be a Yankee fan the more the Red Sox win — people just hate your team because they win. Of course, I’ve experienced this hatred a bit more the last few years mainly because of the New England Patriots. It’s just interesting to get it now from a baseball team allegiance.
