A Musical Review

It’s edging closer to that time of year where those who care start to compile lists of this year’s best. At Circle Six Magazine we’re starting to work on the top ten music albums of the year, which I think is an incredibly hard decision to make. Beside the fact that the music industry releases thousands of albums every year, I find the whole process completely subjective. Maybe that’s why people like it. It’s a chance for someone to find at what one person (or group of people) felt was worth their attention. You can make the process as scientific as possible, but in the end - it’s a gut call on what peeked your interest.

With the impending lists of top items from across various areas (music, movies, books, gadgets, etc.) waiting to fall upon us from every direction, I’ve tried to get a leg up by starting to review all albums I’ve been listening to that have been released this calendar year. So far I’m one album in. Last year at this time, I thought it would be nifty to write small reviews on various albums I listened to. Not only did I not have the time for this, but I largely felt that most of you didn’t care. Yet I imagine some of you out there cared somewhat, so I don’t want to completely forgo this activity. I can’t possibly write a review on every album, yet I can list what recent albums are vying for top spots and how I’m arriving at these conclusions. Well, it’s a good intentioned start nonetheless. We’ll see how I’m doing this time next week.

Preliminary Top Ten List:
(Order Definitely Subject To Change)

  1. David Crowder Band - A Collision or (3+4=7)
  2. Sufjan Stevens - Come On Feel The Illinoise!
  3. Common - Be
  4. My Morning Jacket - Z
  5. Over The Rhine - Drunkard’s Prayer
  6. Panic! At The Disco - A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out
  7. Jump - Between The Dim & The Dark
  8. The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute
  9. Decibully - Sing Out America!
  10. British Sea Power - Open Season

Man this is going to be tough. I’ll keep you posted.

Finally! 6 loving people have cared enough to share their thoughts with me. Why don't you join the party?

  1. British Sea Power? seriously...I’m not saying there isn’t some talent there but in the top ten of the year? And the Arcade Fire’s album “Funeral” isn’t on there?  It is funny how subjective these lists are. Especially since my top 10 would consist of all Bon Jovi....(= sike......

  2. BSP was a toss up between that and _The Decemberists_. And *Arcade* was left off the list because _Funeral_ was released in 2004.

And there are a many albums currently not listed. Like I said it’s definitely going to change. I mean, *Demon Hunter* isn’t on the list nor *Kayne West*, *John Mayer Trio*, *Coldplay*, *Andrew Peterson*, *Andrew Bird*, *Beck*, _Passion: How Great Is Our God_, *Metric*, *Ryan Adams*, *Shooter Jennings*, *Sigur Ros*, *Starflyer 59*, *Wilco*, *Black Sheep Boy*, *Art Brut*, *The Cardigans*, *The Fray*, *Denisom Witmer*, *Copeland*, or the *The Decemberists*.

  3. I thought funeral was released in ‘05...my bad...yeah I’d put some thought into Demon Hunter, Ryan Adams and the Cardinals, Becoming the Archetype and the Decemberists…

  4. The new Royksopp should be there somewhere, but I doubt you’ve listened to their “The Understanding” cd…

  5. I think I might be the only person who isn’t at all impressed with the DCB album. Although for me they were at “bla” and now have moved to “meh”. This year was disappointing to me. Nothing blew my away. I’d say Sun Kil Moon’s cover album is impressive. Copeland was a great surprise from their previous (great leap forward). Coldplay was solid; though nothing new. Same with DCFC. What about White Stripes?

  6. Ah the *Stripes*. Yes, well I forgot about them.

I’d agree that I haven’t heard any ‘epic’ albums this year, but still there have been some solid releases this year.
