A Birthday Gift
Most of you know I'm a pretty big baseball fan. Pretty. Believe it or not, it wasn't until 2004 when I officially moved from moderate fan to completely fan (dragging my dad in with me). The reason? I was asked to join a fantasy baseball league. That was the beginning of the end for me. Now I was forever cursed to scour the league for the best player possible. Yet even then, my love for the numbers and stats of baseball paled to where I am today. Hand me a book about stats and I most likely would shrug my shoulders and argue a case for or against someone based on my gut -- the traditional reasoning method of all things baseball. Yet that all changed in the summer when I read *Michael Lewis'* controversial "Moneyball":http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0393324818/sr=8-1/qid=1145370278/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-3994836-8294359?%5Fencoding=UTF8. All of sudden the game made more sense and seemed more interesting. You were no longer simply panning for gold out in mountains, hoping for a nugget of talent to land in your lap. Instead you now had tools to help you identify the best places to look and dig for talent. Fast forward two years and you'll find me totally excited to receive "this book":http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0465005969/sr=8-1/qid=1145369865/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-3994836-8294359?%5Fencoding=UTF8 last night as an early birthday present from my wife. So much so that I've already read through their two prefaces (yeah, I was amazed by that as well) and landed into the first chapter. I'm a bit of baseball nerd at times, but it's an enjoyable hobby. Some people have movies, video games, or cars. I have baseball and the "Boston Red Sox":http://www.redsox.com to help me pass my time. Happy birthday to me.This entry was posted on Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at 8:30am. It has been filed under Sports, Books, Joshua, Events.
